Reiki

We honor all Reiki lineages and are honored to share Reiki to increase our individual and collective experiences of love and healing.

Reiki is a Japanese healing method developed in the 1920's that has been recognized by the U.S. National Institutes of Health as complementary and alternative medicine. There is actually a lot of good information on the web to help you learn about Reiki, however, if you wish to practice Reiki, we strongly encourage you to take an in-person class. Reiki training includes an attunement or initiation to the energy that is best done in person. If you have any questions about this recommendation feel free to contact us directly!

INTRODUCTION TO REIKI

The word Reiki translates as “Divinely Guided Life Energy.” Reiki is a type of gentle energy healing used to encourage relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance healing. Because Reiki energy healing works with the energies of Divine love and compassion we know that Reiki can do no harm. We have personally experienced how human beings, interpersonal relationships and situations, animal companions, and plants all benefit from receiving the soothing energy of Reiki...and that's just the beginning.

There are many types of energy healing in the world and across history; the type of Usui and Tibetan Reiki we practice is derived from the teachings of a Tendai Buddhist, Mikao Usui, who lived in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century.

There are millions of stories about how Reiki:
  • Reduces pain and inflammation response.
  • Helps ease the difficulty of receiving chemotherapy.
  • Increases mobility in people with chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Creates a calm sensation in people with autism spectrum conditions.
  • Enhances immune functioning.
  • Is enjoyed by animal companions including dogs, cats, horses & birds.
  • Makes sex more pleasurable.
  • Encourages more restful sleep.
There are clinical research studies about the positive healing effects of Reiki, including a double-blind clinical study conducted by the University of California which showed Reiki to reduce the size of glioblastoma (a brain tumor). Reiki is recognized by the U.S. National Institutes of Health as a complementary alternative medicine, and is offered as a complementary healing modality in top research hospitals (such as Yale-New Haven Hospital) and around the country and the world (see also the Center for Reiki Research including Reiki in Hospitals).

One common way to receive Reiki treatment is during a Reiki Session, a relaxing 60- or 90-minute process performed while you recline comfortably on a massage table. Unlike massage, clients remain fully clothed during a treatment, and Reiki does not involve tissue manipulation; in fact, Reiki can be performed using hands-on or hands-off treatment, and for this reason Reiki is a particularly useful modality for helping people recovering from burns, broken bones, and other issues for which direct physical touch is not indicated. Another way someone may receive Reiki is through a distant healing session or during a Reiki Circle or other community event. For us, we often perform Reiki treatment on ourselves when we engage in regular Reiki meditation practice.

Reiki is not a religion--Reiki is a nondenominational modality for encouraging relaxation and personal peace that is practiced by millions of people around the world from all walks of life and of all belief systems. There are Reiki practitioners who are Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, and any other religion that may come to mind--there are also practitioners not aligned with any religion in particular. One of the many reasons we enjoy sharing Reiki so much is that it is open to everyone.

Reiki translates as “Divinely-guided life energy,” a loving life energy that flows according to a broader and deeper wisdom than we as human beings cannot fully explain. We and our students have found that the introduction of Reiki to any situation has only enhanced the positive outcome of that situation, and following our Reiki teachers we often like to respond to this question by saying: “When is the energy of Divine Love inappropriate?”
